Dr. Dawn Schwab Visits TCC

Dr. Dawn Schwab, 1993 graduate of Texas Chiropractic College, returned to campus Wednesday, May 19 to share her story and business knowledge with students.

Dr. Schwab, like many others, became interested in chiropractic through a positive, personal experience.

“At eleven I suffered with migraine headaches. A lot of you know that it’s not an easy condition to treat. The reality is after six months in and out of medical doctor’s offices, they were thinking I had anything from an eating disorder to a brain tumor,” she said. “My parent’s as a last resort took me to a local family chiropractor and within three months the headaches were under control.”

Not only did Dr. Schwab share her personal ties to chiropractic, but also her experience in practice. She discussed with students the reality of working with other healthcare specialists to form a team.

“Patients will come to you having been to every doctor, every specialist, every surgeon and every physical therapist and no one could help them.  But for whatever reason we [chiropractors] have a key component that will add to their health care regimen,” Dr. Schwab said. “I’m not saying chiropractic is the end all, be all. I work every day with medical doctors and pain management specialists.”

Dr. Schwab also spoke to students about the importance of her education at TCC.

“I know school is hard. I hated it. I did not graduate at the top of my class, I was an A/B student, but certainly not the valedictorian” she said. “But I practiced my craft and my art. All of the adjusting and palpation techniques they are teaching you, all the lab diagnoses that you don’t think you will use, you will. You will use them every day in practice.”

She ended the day with a final piece of advice for current TCC students.

“I took what I learned at TCC and turned it into a passion. I think if I could only leave you with one thing today, it would be that if you guys don’t practice from your heart and if you’re not in it for the sole reason to help people, your patients will know it,” she said. “That’s the reality. You have to get up every day with the hope and knowledge that you are going to change someone’s life.”

Special thanks to the STCA for hosting and organizing this event.
