TCC & Cenikor Foundation

Another rotation available to MHC interns is the Cenikor Foundation Rotation, started in 2010. The Cenikor Foundation specializes in helping people with chronic substance dependence. The interns treat the residents of the Cenikor unit a few miles away from the TCC campus in Deer Park. This rotation gives interns an excellent opportunity to work with patients that  have complex clinical problems typically compounded by psychological influences associated with addiction and addictive behavior.

Since 1967, the Cenikor Foundation has specialized in helping people with chronic substance dependence and has five locations including the one in Deer Park where MHC interns working under a attending clinician visit twice a week.

Another aspect of Cenikor is the Vocational Services program, which provides crews for jobs in areas close to the facility. Residents are not only being treated for addiction and behavior problems, but they are put back into the work force as well. Many local companies keep Cenikor residents employed while in the program. This becomes another area where chiropractic comes into play.

“Stating that the environment is different as compared to Moody Health Center would be an understatement. Although we have the same tools, tables and rooms, it is the type of patients we meet that makes this environment so different,” observed one of the first TCC interns to participate.  “As a rehabilitation facility, Cenikor is home to a variety of patients who have long suffered from dangerous addictions and are now taking the stand to rise above it. You won’t see that type of patient very often in the real world. When you’re there, you hear their stories and you see their progress. From the patient that’s been there for nine days to the patient that’s been there for nine months, you see what mental, physical and emotional changes each individual goes through.”
