Visiting Scholar to Speak Jan. 28

1/21/2010 -

The Office of Research and the Student Alumni Association will host guest speaker, Caroline Peterson, DC, PhD, MPH, CPM, Thursday, Jan. 28. As a certified professional midwife and Doctor of Chiropractic, Peterson’s experience will offer insight to students about treating pregnant women as well as their other patients.

Dr. Peterson completed her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology in 1989 from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. before entering the field of chiropractic at the Los Angeles Colleges of Chiropractic (now Southern California University of Health Sciences), where she received her Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1994. She continued her education in 2008 by earning her MPH in Epidemiology and PhD in Applied Medical & Biological Anthropology ,both from the University of South Florida, and completed her CPM certificate training  from Maternidad La Luz.

Well established with her research and medical experience, she is the owner and clinician of a chiropractic/midwifery facility in Portland, Ore. Currently, she is a National Institute of Health Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine T-32 postdoctoral fellow at the Oregon Health & Science University, where she is posted in the departments of neurology and OB/gynecology.  There she studies pregnancy-related low back pain, cranial-sacral therapy for infantile colic, massage for infants with cancer, and the design and implementation of a curriculum to teach breech vaginal birth.

“I look forward to meeting students and faculty at TCC and discussing research, culture, and caring,” Dr. Peterson said.

Peterson will give two presentations on campus, the first at noon in the Russell Auditorium and the second  at 2 p.m. in the Elliott Auditorium entitled “Pain, Love, and the CNS: A pilot RCT of chiropractic care for pregnancy-related low back pain,” and “Caring in the Clinical Encounter: What’s culture got to do with it,” respectively.

A special thanks to Dr. Al Adams for organizing this event.
