TCC Celebrates National Public Health Week

PASADENA, Texas – On Monday, April 4, 2011, Texas Chiropractic College kicked off National Public Health Week (NPHW) its campus in Pasadena, Texas. The Moody Health Center launched a new and on-going smoking cessation advising campaign for patients who smoke. The “Ask me about Smoke-free” project is being coordinated by Dr. Micah Barber, and all interns and staff attending clinicians completed an advising workshop presented by Dr. Will Evans, who developed the program.
On Tuesday, Director of Clinical Research at Logan College of Chiropractic in St. Louis Cheryl Hawk, DC, PhD, CHES, CWP, FICC and noted chiropractic researcher and wellness expert, lectured to all interns and attendings on the importance of integrating health promotion, accepted wellness-measures and preventive screening in chiropractic practice.
Wednesday Dr. Hawk also presented to the entire faculty and student body about the Chiropractic Health Care section of the American Public Health Association and the history of its formation. She additionally discussed numerous resources doctors of chiropractic can use to implement prevention, health promotion and wellness measures in clinical practice.
Thursday, April 07, 2011 was declared Research Day at TCC, and poster presentations for various research conferences attended by TCC researchers were on display in the Russell Gym. During the week, t-shirts and raffle tickets were handed to students in attendance at the earlier events, and NPHW was concluded with drawings for an iPad 2, two iPods, and five $100 gift cards, courtesy of Drucker Labs, which underwrote the week’s activities.
National Public Health week is an annual event sponsored by the American Public Health Association, the world’s oldest public health organization. This year’s national theme was, “Safety is no Accident: Live Injury-free.” More information about the national efforts is available at http://www.nphw.org.
