TCC and JCA celebrate new chapter in storied tradition of chiropractic partnership

July 21, 2015 - PASADENA, Texas

Delegates from the Japan Chiropractic Association (JCA) joined Texas Chiropractic College (TCC) this spring to renew their shared commitment to evidence-informed chiropractic health care. The JCA’s visit ran from April 17 until May 1 and included several key moments celebrating the continuation of a partnership built upon rich intercultural exchange.
The visit of 116 JCA members officially kicked off at the opening banquet held at the Doubletree Hotel at Houston’s Hobby Airport. Dr. Stephen Foster, TCC Provost, presented the JCA with a signed proclamation from Annise Parker, Mayor of the City of Houston, which declared April 18 as “Japan Chiropractic Association Day”. The mayor also expressed Houston’s profound appreciation for the JCA’s genuine commitment to promoting chiropractic as a natural and holistic approach to patient-centered health care. One could sense the energy and excitement at this event as both TCC and JCA members discussed the work they would complete together over the next two weeks.

The very next day, at the Spring 2015 Commencement Ceremony for TCC graduates, one member of the JCA delegation received a special honor for the support he has provided for the chiropractic profession and TCC. Nobunori Iwama, JCA’s adviser, was awarded an honorary doctorate’s degree in chiropractic humanities. The degree acknowledges how Dr. Iwama’s efforts help expand the chiropractic education necessary for improving the health of patients and effective clinic management in Japan. He is the son of Dr. Yasunori Iwama, honorary chairman of the JCA and the namesake for the Iwama Education Center on TCC’s campus.

Also on April 18, Dr. Nobunori Iwama was recognized at the ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony of the newly renovated Dr. Nobunori Iwama Anatomical Laboratory. Dr. Iwama’s support was instrumental to the success of the $565,000 renovation of the anatomical building, which received new state-of-the-art equipment, ventilation, flooring, HVAC and high intensity lighting.
“Texas Chiropractic College is honored to have the name of Dr. Nobunori Iwama associated with the state-of-the-art anatomical laboratory,” Dr. Brad McKechnie, TCC president said. “His generous donation will greatly improve our students’ academic experience for years to come.” State Senator Sylvia Garcia was also present at the ribbon cutting and spoke kind words of appreciation for the work done by both TCC and the JCA.

At the April 25 TCC Gala, themed “Cruising into Summer,” JCA members served as the guests of honor, and TCC used the signature fundraising event and premier social and networking occasion to recognize the achievements brought about through the collaboration between TCC and JCA.

The JCA visit officially concluded at the closing banquet, which returned to the Doubletree at Hobby Airport. At this event, another signed proclamation from City of Pasadena Mayor Johnny Isbell was presented to the JCA. This document thanked the visiting JCA members for the stimulus their visit provided to the hospitality and entertainment sectors of
the local economy. Both TCC and JCA exchanged gifts between its members and leaders and shared these symbols of mutual friendship and respect as reminders of the work done during this visit.
