Preceptorships

Back to Home Academics Hands-on Training Preceptorships

Preceptorships

Texas Chiropractic College students stand out for their readiness to enter practice on the day they graduate. TCC’s groundbreaking preceptorship program is a big reason why.

TCC offers a robust preceptorship program allowing the opportunity to practice alongside experienced practitioners in their private practices. These optional, apprentice-style internships enable you to work off campus in a chiropractic office, getting hands-on training from a chiropractor in various professional settings.

These experiences provide direct preparation for your chiropractic career. TCC’s preceptorships stand out for their:

  • Quality of supervising practitioners. Because of TCC’s reputation for excellence, our preceptorship program partners with highly accomplished chiropractors. You’ll develop high-level skills and build personal relationships with chiropractors who have years of wisdom to share.
  • Variety of opportunities. Beginning in the 9th trimester, an intern can complete multiple preceptorship rotations, allowing hands-on interaction with patients.
  • Depth and breadth of instruction. In addition to working on your chiropractic technique, interns gain insight into the logistics of running a practice, including medical software, insurance, billing, scheduling, and office administration.
  • Career cultivation. Having one or more preceptorships on your resume can help you stand out in the job market after graduation. If you decide to go into independent practice, preceptorship experience can help you understand how patient acquisition and referrals operate.

Preceptorships Promote Practice-Readiness

It takes more than great technique to be a great chiropractor. TCC’s preceptorship program helps you develop all the skills necessary to operate a successful practice.

First and foremost, preceptorships offer extra experience in patient interaction, with emphasis on:

  • Communicating effectively
  • Taking patient medical histories
  • Conducting examinations
  • Making accurate diagnoses
  • Providing treatment

Preceptorships also enable you to learn management skills that include:

  • Delegating authority
  • Building collaborative teams
  • Providing constructive feedback
  • Optimizing resource allocations

Finally, the preceptorship experience offers a first-hand education into the administrative and business side of running a chiropractic office, including:

  • Appointment scheduling
  • Accounting and billing
  • Recordkeeping
  • Insurance paperwork and filings
  • Patient relations
  • Marketing
  • Maintaining equipment and supplies

Although preceptorships are not a required part of TCC’s Doctor of Chiropractic curriculum, they are extremely popular among TCC students. Externship IX is a 4-week rotation during trimester 9 and Externship X or Preceptorship may extend up to 12 weeks during trimester 10 and provide a level of detailed, personalized instruction.
