5 Tips for Adjusting to Chiropractic College

Blog Sizing (1)

Starting school at a Chiropractic College can feel intimidating. However, there are multiple things you can do to help ease the pressure that comes with starting a new college experience.

  1. There is a huge shift  in culture from undergrad to chiropractic college. In undergrad, most students take anywhere from 12-18 hours of classes. In chiropractic college, you may take anywhere from 20.5 to 28.5 hours per trimester. Knowing this ahead of time can help you prepare your mindset, in addition to adjusting your study habits and time management skills. Some students have found it helpful to schedule their day into hourly increments through tools like Excel, Google Sheets, and TimeTree; many also use digital planners through apps like GoodNotes or Notability to organize their assignment deadlines and exams. Texas Chiropractic College (TCC) offers a free digital planner available for download here

  1. It is important and helpful to get involved early on and stay involved throughout your time in school. Most students suggest attending events, joining a club, and networking with fellow students and professors. Some of our student clubs and organizations include the Student Body Association (SBA), Student American Chiropractic Association (SACA), Student American Black Chiropractic Association (SABCA) and Student Texas Chiropractic Association (STCA). See a full list of clubs and organizations on campus here.

  1. If you have the option, living close to campus is ideal; running home during breaks, going back home if you forget anything, and getting more sleep are just a few things that make proximity to campus a practical choice. Also, on the days when motivation is running low, living close by will keep you encouraged to attend events and show up to class.

  1. Having a “rest day” each week is a proactive way to set yourself up for success and prevent burnout. Dedicate one day a week to doing something that helps you feel rested and recharged. You can also head to the Student Recreation Center, which includes a multi-purpose sports court, gym, and movie theater. It’s open seven days a week and offers a variety of ways to relax, work out, and have fun.

  1. Working while pursuing a chiropractic degree can be very challenging and is generally not recommended.  However, students interested in working and attending school may be eligible for Federal Work-Study. This program provides funds for part-time employment to students who work on campus while pursuing their degree. To check your eligibility, contact the Office of Financial Aid at  financialaid@txchiro.edu. Additionally, TCC offers a wide range of scholarships each trimester. Click here to learn more!

In conclusion, remember that everyone feels slightly nervous when starting chiropractic school. Luckily, there are many things you can do to help ease the pressure. Talk to your friends and family, get involved in extracurricular activities, and take advantage of the college’s resources. With a little effort, you’ll be sure to have a successful first trimester of chiropractic school.
