World Mental Health Day
Today, October 10th, is World Mental Health Day. This year’s theme, “Make Mental Health & Well-Being for All a Global Priority,” highlights the mental health crisis that grew during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic. Organized by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), this day has been celebrated since 1992. It aims to raise awareness globally by collaborating with partners around the world to take action and create lasting change.
It should be noted that each person’s approach to mental health will be different and there are many things you can do to help your physical and emotional wellness. Here are a few tips to help you start your journey.
Counseling through AllyHealth
As students and employees of TCC, you are eligible for ten free sessions of counseling through AllyHealth and unlimited short-term sessions through the section of the app named “Mental Health Counseling Short Term and Immediate Care.” To learn more about your benefits through AllyHealth or to get signed up, email studentservices@txchiro.edu.
Find a Community
Texas Chiropractic College is home to a new club called The Wellness Culture (TWC). They are centered on helping new and current students find ways of relieving stress from the mind and body for the purpose of a healthier self. TWC is open to all students and is free to join. In the past, TWC has hosted activities like yoga, painting, and gardening. “The best way for people to sign up is by attending the events,” says President of TWC, Niacyriah Britton. “We plan to have more events rather than meetings since it can take activities and conversations for people to discover what helps them.” People can find out about all TWC events on their Instagram @tcc_wellnessculture. For any questions, email niacyriah.britton@txchiro.edu
Advocate and Increase Awareness
World Mental Health Day is a time for world leaders and citizens to unite and establish practical efforts to improve mental health for all. We can all play a role in increasing awareness about the current crisis. “We envision a world in which mental health is valued, promoted and protected; where everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy mental health and to exercise their human rights; and where everyone can access the mental health care they need,” stated the World Health Organization.
