Hazing Prevention
Life at TCC Safety and Security Hazing Prevention
Texas Chiropractic College believes that true human development can best occur in an atmosphere of social and ethical responsibility. TCC does not consider hazing as a contributing factor to the positive development or welfare of the individual. Therefore, TCC recognizes acts of hazing as irresponsible, intolerable, and inconsistent with the principles of higher education and basic human development. Hazing is a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and Texas State Laws.
What is Hazing?
Hazing is defined as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act—whether occurring on or off campus—committed by an individual or group against a student, that endangers the student's mental or physical health or safety. These acts are often tied to the initiation or membership process of a student organization.
Hazing is prohibited regardless of the student’s consent and is a violation of Texas law and college policy.
Hazing May Include:
-
Physical brutality
Examples: whipping, beating, striking, branding, electric shocking, or applying harmful substances to the body. -
Dangerous physical activity
Examples: sleep deprivation, exposure to extreme weather, confinement in small spaces, forced exercise, or any activity that poses a risk to physical or mental health. -
Forced consumption
Examples: requiring students to eat or drink excessive or harmful amounts of food, alcohol, drugs, or other substances. -
Mental or emotional harm
Examples: intimidation, threats of ostracism, humiliation, extreme mental stress, or activities that may cause a student to withdraw from the institution or organization. -
Illegal or unethical acts
Examples: requiring a student to perform a task that violates the Texas Penal Code or the Texas Education Code, including Section 37.151.
